Over the weekend Kanye West premiered his film ‘Runway’, which is technically labeled as the music video for the song of the same title. Clocking in over 30 minutes, the film follows the story of a pheonix that falls from the sky and crosses paths with Kanye. He falls in love with her, but realizing that she does not belong in this world, the phoenix burns herself to return to her world.
I’m going to get this out of the way now, the film is insanely pretentious. It’s over the top, and honestly shouldn’t be billed at the music video for ‘Runaway’. Even though ‘Runaway’ was the only song that was played in its entirety, the film was more of an album preview than anything else. Not that I’m complaining, but I can’t accept the fact that this is a music video for one song.
(Sidenote: ‘All Of The Lights’ sounds like a smash, but it’s interesting because you could only hear Rihanna and a quick note from Charlie Wilson in the snippet. I wonder where the other 9 artists are…)
I will say that the video is beautifully shot. I was surprised to see that Kanye directed it, but even more surprised to see that Hype Williams wrote it. I would have originally though it to be reversed, but Kanye proved himself worthy with this one. I found the story to be drawn out, and the dialogue was horrible, but I let it slide because of the cinematography. When Kanye works on something he pours his heart into it, and it’s evident here.
Overall I thought the video was unessesary. The actually scene during ‘Runaway’ was the worst part, and that doesn’t make sense to me. I’m beginning to believe that Kanyes album is becoming overly hyped. I still want to hear the album as a whole, but the video actually made me care less. While it was beautiful to watch, that’s all it did for me and I would never watch it again. We’ll see if the film helps the song chart wise, which it hopefully will.
What did you think of the video?
