After a preview was released a few years ago the T.I./Christina Aguilera collaboration ‘Castle Walls’ can be heard in full as of today. The song, which serves as the next single for ‘No Mercy, finds the two lamenting about the negative side of fame.
As I said earlier this week, both T.I. and Christina need a hit to their name, and it looks like they are about to achieve it. Alex Da Kid, the producer of the song, has become a king in producing hip-hop collaborations. ‘Castle Walls’ should follow in the foot steps of his biggest hit ‘Love The Way You Lie’ .
The moody beat reflects the nature of the song. With lyrics like, “Everyone thinks that I have it all/ It’s so empty living behind these castle walls”, the reflects the depravity that many a celebrity struggles with. T.I. has always been a rapper to put his foot forward and reveal the struggles in his life. ‘Castle Walls’ is a statement against what most people assume about the lives of celebrities.
There’s no new ideas being revealed in the song, but the imagery of a castle wall is intriguing. Being trapped with something you built yourself with nothing to your name is a depressing thought. For someone like T.I. who has had his fair share of mishaps broadcast to the public, the song is eerie to listen to.
Surprisingly T.I.’s rapping sounds different on this track. He’s not sing-rapping on the track, which is refreshing to hear after some of his recent work. The passion is back in his voice, and he sounds sincere. Christina sound flawless on the track, although I actually prefer the first stripped down chorus to the full choruses later on in the song.
I was hoping for something a little different from T.I. and I actually think this is it. While it is still miles away from his old material, this could be his best collaboration since ‘Live Your Life’. Alex Da Kid also shows some growth on the track. The beat is different from ‘Airplanes’ and ‘Love The Way You Lie’. It’s a good thing for Alex that the song sounds different. The last thing that he needs is to be boxed into a sound. As a producer you need to be versatile, and his work has been so far.
The song should be the first actual hit from ‘No Mercy’. After ‘Got Your Back’ failed to ignite the charts, and the legal problems arose with T.I., I thought the album would never hit the streets. ‘Castle Walls’ will easily hit the top 10. I don’t know if it has the power to reach number 1, but I honestly think the radio will eat it up.
What do you think of ‘Castle Walls’?
Do they have a hit on their hands?
