I’ve been meaning to write a review on this song since the AMA’s, and since the video was just released I figured I should do it now before it was too late.
‘Coming Home’ is technically the fifth song released from the groups album ‘Last Train To Paris’. The album is set to finally be released on December 14th after being delayed for more than a year. Compared to the last few singles ‘Coming Home’ has the biggest chance of becoming a radio hit, but there one problem that could prevent this.
Diddy’s rapping in the verses is bad. There is really no way around it. Lyrically the first verse is actually solid, but the second verses lacks flow. There’s something about his rapping voice that I really don’t like. I actually preferred his singing on ‘Hello Good Morning’ and ‘Loving You No More’. I won’t sit here bash Diddy as an artist because there are a few times that he shines, but this just isn’t one of them. I think he would have been much better off singing the verses.
The songs real saving grace in the chorus, and it always comes at the perfect time. Right when you think you had enough of the verses the chorus gracefully comes to pick you up. It’s has a phenomenal melody, and the girls all sound great together. A bridge from the girls would have made the song more interesting to break up the lackluster verses, but like I said, the chorus is so good that it actual saves the song.
The subject manner of the song is uplifting and challenging and I could see people liking the song. There is another version of the song that J.Cole previously did, which I actually prefer more. Diddy is a smart man though because the chorus is a hit, and I know he knew that when he bought the song.
Considering the lack of hits towards the album ‘Coming Home’ could be the albums last chance at success. Then again, Diddy is the president of Bad Boy, so even if the album fails I don’t think he has too much to worry about. Overall the song was a decent effort, but it just doesn’t make the cut. I still am very much interested in the project, and hope the song picks up on the radio.
