Over the past few years the UK has been producing some serious talent. Even though American Market is notoriously difficult to crack, a few UK artist have broke through, some thing that I expect Jessie J to do.
Justin Timberlake claims that she has the best voice in the world right now, and she just won the coveted BBC Sound Award for 2011, which has gone too the likes of Adele, and 50 Cent.
So what makes her good?
She co-wrote the hit Miley Cyrus song ‘Party in the USA’ with Dr. Luke back in 2009, and has worked with Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake and Chris Brown. Any artist that can actually write music stands out to me automatically because it’s so rare these days. At the young age of 22, Jessie knows how to write a song, and more importantly what the public wants to hear, something she displays on her first single ‘Do It Like a Dude’.
Jessie originally wrote the song with Rihanna in mind, which is evident in it’s style, but she kept the track for herself. The song could have easily been labeled as a Rihanna rip off, but Jessie’s personality prevented that from happening. She knows how to control her voice and isn’t afraid to play around with different sounds. She reminds me of Nicki Minaj adding weird voices and tones to her music.
‘Do It Like a Dude’ is nothing necessarily groundbreaking, but it boast a strong persona that should only get stronger in time. The song is currently number 2 in the UK, and it could easily rise in the upcoming weeks. While the US will be serviced her song ‘Pricetag’ as the first single I would not be surprised if ‘Do It Like a Dude’ received the single treatment here as well.
I heard about Jessie a few months ago and ignored her because I didn’t like the song at first. I thought it was catchy, but I didn’t see what all the fuss was about. Then she won the BBC Sound Award which shocked me until I watched her BRIT Launch Party performance. She performed an acoustic version of ‘Do It Like a Dude’ which is one of the best performance I have seen in a while.
Her voice is amazing. End of story.
I’ll admit, I was freaked out the first time I saw it, but I continued to watch it again and again. She has a strong stage presence, and I was blown away with her delivery. She showcased her voice perfectly, boasting her strength, range, and creativity. If she keeps this up she could easily become as interesting as Lady Gaga without the shock value.
Her debut album is going to be released on April 12 so keep an eye out for that. I’m sure you’ll be seeing her around the blog a bit more.
Listen to the original ‘Do It Like a Dude’ and then you
watch the acoustic version. Trust me.
