‘We Found Love’ – Rihanna

This week marks the debut of the new Rihanna single “We Found Love”, the first offering from her upcoming sixth studio album due later this year. The single was produced by Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, who is currently charting worldwide with his Kelis collaboration “Bounce.”

With Loud only being out for 10 months, the premiere of “We Found Love” was unexpected for most, and was met with mix reactions.

I don’t really know how to start reviewing “We Found Love” because of the circumstances surrounding the song. “Cheers”, the seventh single from Loud, just advanced to number 8 this week on the Billboard Hot 100. Why would Def Jam begin a new album campaign when Loud Continue reading

‘Typewriter’ – Alicia Keys (1997)

Rating: A-

This year marks the 10 year anniversary of Alicia Key’s debut album Songs in A Minor. To celebrate the occasion Keys is re-releasing the album on June 28, filled with new songs and footage.

Rap-Up posted ‘Typerwriter’ yesterday, a song that was recorded in Keys apartment in 1997. This was years before her debut album with J Records, so this is a nice look into the foundation of her career. Continue reading

‘Moves Like Jagger’ – Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguleria

Rating: B

The Voice has been one of the biggest surprises of 2011. The singing competition seems to get bigger each week, even though the talent of the contestants is lacking for the most part.

Like American Idol, the show has thrust the celebrity judges back into the limelight. After Jennifer Lopez experienced the comeback of a lifetime this year, I’m sure the judges of the The Voice are hoping for similar success.

In all fairness Adam Levine and his band Maroon 5 are not Continue reading

Taio Cruz Covers John Lennon

Taio Cruz has decided to coved the John Lennon classic ‘Imagine’ as a charity single. I have to say that I automatically pinned the cover as a fail before even listening to it, which is wrong because I should give everyone an equal chance. The song is such a classic that I thought Cruz to be insane to attempt to recreate it, but I decided to give it a listen anyway.

Up until this point Cruz has mainly been a dance/pop act. With songs like ‘Higher’ and ‘Dynamite’, he has yet to show any range. That it why I was so skeptical, because I automatically assumed he would try to modernize the song. Much to my surprised though Cruz decided to stay close to the original, showcasing his voice in a way we’ve yet to see Continue reading

‘Radio’ – Raphael Saadiq

Rating: A

R&B singer Raphael Saadiq premiered the first single from his fourth album Stone Rollin’ yesterday title ‘Radio’. The song is a throwback track done in the most respectful and tasteful way.

Raphael Saadiq experienced major critical success in 2008 with his album The Way I See It, which was hailed by many a critic. He is one of the only true R&B artists left, staying devoted to the genre. (Just check out ‘Never Give You Up’ or ‘Love That Girl’ to get a quick taste of his solo work, or look up his work with Tony! Toni! Toné!)

‘Radio’ is in the same vein as his older songs, with a strong influence Continue reading

‘Hurricane’- 30 Seconds to Mars

Rating: A-

I’ve always liked 30 Seconds to Mars and I wanted to switch things up by covering a song that you wouldn’t expect to see here, so I decided to cover their new single ‘Hurricane’. A year after releasing there third album ‘This Is War’ the band released their fourth single late last month.

Ever since I heard ‘The Kill’ I have always been intrigued by the bands sound, and I think that Leto has a great voice. More times than not their songs have a dark undertone, and while I can’t listen to that type of music all the time, I appreciate it when I’m in the mood.

‘Gimme Dat’ Remix

I realized this morning that Ciara’s fourth album, ‘Basic Instinct’, is due in only 3 days. Considering the lack of presence on both the stage and the charts I don’t know how well the album is going to do it’s first week.

Two weeks ago I heard the official remix to her single ‘Gimme Dat’. Originally I had no intention of posting the track because I thought that it was a sad attempt to gain some last Continue reading

‘Rolling in the Deep’- Adele (Video Included)

Rating: A

I have been meaning to write a review on ‘Rolling in the Deep’ since the song first came out in November, but time has gotten the best of me. After premiering the video to the song yesterday I thought it would be the perfect time to redeem myself by posting both a review and the music video.

Adele has become a critic favorite after her success debut album ’19’. The singer defied all the odd by breaking the US market with her powerhouse voice and style. She has won two Grammy’s so far for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Performance.

‘Coming Home’ Diddy-Dirty Money (Song/Video)

Rating: C+

I’ve been meaning to write a review on this song since the AMA’s, and since the video was just released I figured I should do it now before it was too late.

‘Coming Home’ is technically the fifth song released from the groups album ‘Last Train To Paris’. The album is set to finally Continue reading

‘Castle Walls’ T.I. feat. Christina Aguilera

Rating: A-

After a preview was released a few years ago the T.I./Christina Aguilera collaboration ‘Castle Walls’ can be heard in full as of today. The song, which serves as the next single for ‘No Mercy, finds the two lamenting about the negative side of fame.

As I said earlier this week, both T.I. and Christina need a hit Continue reading
